2010 Survey Data & Reports
A Travel Day may include trips from home to work, to a restaurant, to a gas station, grocery store, or day care, to home. See the One-Day Travel Diary (pdf).

TBI surveys

  • Household Interview Survey - Approximately 13,000 households in the greater region (the seven-county area plus the twelve adjacent counties) kept a travel diary, recording all of their trips for a selected day or days. A sub-sample of 250 households were issued a portable GPS unit to record all of their trips for a week. Participants were selected randomly. This survey took place in the fall of 2010 through March 2012.   • Transit On-Board Survey – A random sample of transit system riders (bus, LRT, and commuter rail) was given surveys to fill out describing their trip. This survey was completed in November 2010.   • Airport Survey - Departing passengers at the Minneapolis-St. Paul International airport were surveyed regarding how they got to the airport and where they started their trip. This survey was completed in June 2011. The survey data is now available here and detailed documentation of the survey methodology is available here.

  • External Mailback Survey – Surveys were mailed to residents outside the Twin Cities region asking questions about their last trip into and out of the region. This survey occurred in the spring of 2012. Detailed documentation is available here.

  • The Mall of America Survey - In September 2011, survey crews were at selected entrances to the mall, interviewing visitors about how they arrived, from what part of the region they came, by what transportation mode, and the number of people in their group.
