Wastewater Treatment Plant Monitoring

Image of the Metropolitan Wastewater Treatment Plant outfallMetropolitan Council Environmental Services tests treated wastewater effluent discharged from eight Twin Cities metro area wastewater treatment plants into area rivers. We test the effluent for toxicity to meet National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System permit requirements and ensure that the treated wastewater is safe to enter area rivers.

We conduct groundwater monitoring  at several wastewater treatment plants to determine the impacts of past buisolids disposal practices on local groundwater quality. We also monitor this goroundwater to meet National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System permits and state monitoring requirements, as well as for planning purposes.
