Kris Sanda
Metropolitan Council Member, District 10

Kris Sanda was appointed to the Metropolitan Council by Governor Tim Pawlenty in 2005 and reappointed in 2007. Sanda represents District 10, which includes the Anoka County cities of Blaine, Circle Pines, and Lexington, and the Ramsey County cities of Arden Hills, Blaine, Falcon Heights, Lauderdale, Mounds View, New Brighton, North Oaks, Roseville, Shoreview, and Spring Lake Park.

Sanda comes to the Council from a long career in public service, having served in the administrations of five Minnesota governors. For Governor Al Quie she was the director of the Office of Consumer Services and the consumer advocate for the State of Minnesota from 1979-1983. In 1984, Governor Rudy Perpich appointed Sanda to the first Racing Commission.

During the administration of Governor Arne Carlson, from 1991-1999, Sanda was commissioner of the Department of Public Service.  Concurrently she was a member of the Minnesota Environmental Quality Board. Sanda retired from the Minnesota Board of Medical Practice in 2007, having first been appointed by Governor Jesse Ventura and again by Governor Pawlenty.

Sanda is a member of the Council’s Management and Community Development Committees.

“Because the Metropolitan Council coordinates planning and delivers services to cities and counties in the region, communicating with local governments is critical,” Sanda said. “I will frequently visit local city council and county board meetings in my district, and individually contact problem solvers and hardworking elected officials who do their best every day for Anoka and Ramsey County taxpayers. I have always believed that a public office is a public trust.”

Sanda is past president of the Minnesota Lutheran Social Service Foundation; board secretary and a consumer director of the Medica Board of Directors; and a member of Anoka County Ambassadors and a coalition of Northstar commuter rail advocates. She helped found the Growth and Justice Coalition. She previously served as vice president of the St. Paul American Red Cross, and was a member of the City of Blaine’s Transportation and Open Space Committees, and the Metropolitan Council’s Transportation Advisory Board and Livable Communities Advisory Committee. Her civic activities have been numerous. She has been an active member of the Republican Party for decades, holding every office from precinct chair to national delegate.

A native of Detroit Lakes, Minnesota, Sanda attended both St. Cloud State University and the Hubert Humphrey Institute of Public Affairs. Kris and her husband, Richard O. Johnson, have eight grown children and twelve grandchildren.  Kris and Dick are members of Christ Lutheran Church in Blaine. She also enjoys antiques and refinishing furniture.
