Cara Letofsky

Metropolitan Council Member, District 8

Cara Letofsky was appointed to the Metropolitan Council in March 2015 by Governor Mark Dayton. She lives in Minneapolis, and represents District 8, which includes parts of Minneapolis and St. Anthony in Hennepin and Ramsey counties.

Letofsky brings over 20 years of experience working with communities on economic development and affordable housing. Through her consulting firm, Mill City Consulting, Letofsky supports community organizations and efforts to better meet their missions for community improvement. From 2006 – 2010, she worked as Policy Aide to former Minneapolis Mayor R.T. Rybak. In this role, she led projects related to housing and homelessness, community and neighborhood revitalization, economic development and workforce development, and environmental sustainability. Previous to joining the Mayor’s Office, Letofsky served as the Executive Director in three Minneapolis neighborhood organizations, and founded the City of Lakes Community Land Trust in 2002.

Additionally, Letofsky serves as a mayoral appointee to the Minneapolis Public Housing Authority (MPHA) Board of Commissioners where she was a representative to the Strategic Planning Committee and serves as the Chair of the Audit Committee. She is the President of the  Hennepin History Museum Board of Directors, where she enjoys bringing local history to a broader audience.

On the Metropolitan Council, Letofsky serves on the Audit, Environment, and Transportation Committees. 

Letofsky has a bachelor’s degree in History and Political Science from the University of Wisconsin-Madison and a master’s degree from Hunter College of the City University of New York. Additionally, she completed course work in the Master of Planning Program at the Humphrey Institute of Public Affairs at the University of Minnesota.

Letofsky grew up in Minneapolis and currently lives in the Longfellow neighborhood right off the Midtown Greenway with her husband, Jim, two active children between the ages of diapers and driver’s licenses, and the family dog, Aspen. Together they enjoy skiing, watching whatever sport or performance the kids are in, and attending local musical theater.
