Nora Slawik brings to the Metropolitan Council more than 30 years of experience in government, nonprofit and educational organizations. A seven-term State Representative from suburban Ramsey and Washington Counties, she most recently was the mayor of Maplewood from 2014 through 2018. While in Maplewood, Slawik held leadership roles on the Rush Line Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) Project, the Gold Line BRT Project, the Regional Council of Mayors, the Minnesota Mayors Association of the League of Cities, and the Suburban Ramsey Family Collaborative. She served on the Metropolitan Council’s Transportation Advisory Board in 2014 and 2015.

Biography

Nora Slawik brings to the Metropolitan Council more than 30 years of experience in government, nonprofit and educational organizations. A seven-term State Representative from suburban Ramsey and Washington Counties, she most recently was the mayor of Maplewood from 2014 through 2018.

While in Maplewood, Slawik held leadership roles on the Rush Line Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) Project, the Gold Line BRT Project, the Regional Council of Mayors, the Minnesota Mayors Association of the League of Cities, and the Suburban Ramsey Family Collaborative. She served on the Metropolitan Council’s Transportation Advisory Board in 2014 and 2015.

As mayor, Slawik led Maplewood’s economic redevelopment program by expanding affordable and market-rate housing in the city. She helped many new businesses open in Maplewood including the state-of-the-art 3M Carlton Sciences Center and the HealthEast Clinic and Specialty Center. She partnered with Ramsey County leaders to open the Fish Creek Natural Area, a 70-acre preserve with prairies, woodlands and hiking trails on a bluff over the Mississippi River in south Maplewood.

In the Minnesota House of Representatives from 1997 to 1999 and again from 2001 to 2013, Slawik chaired the Early Childhood Learning Finance Committee for two terms. As chair, she worked to increase state investments in young children through increased childcare and scholarship funding.

Active in her community, Slawik is a past president of the local League of Women Voters. She has done work professionally for the United Way and other nonprofits. Slawik has also been involved with the Autism Society of Minnesota, the North Star Scouting Museum, and served as a literacy tutor for the Minnesota Reading Corps.

Slawik holds an master's degree in public affairs from the Humphrey School of Public Affairs at the University of Minnesota, was a Salzburg Global Seminar fellow, and also taught at Humphrey on early childhood and public policy. She earned a B.S. in Parks and Recreation Management from Arizona State University.

Slawik is married and with her husband has four adult children.
