Lona Schreiber

Metropolitan Council Member, District 2

Lona Schreiber was appointed to the Metropolitan Council by Gov. Mark Dayton in March 2011 and reappointed in 2015.  Schreiber lives in Brooklyn Park and represents District 2, which includes the Anoka County cities of Columbia Heights, Fridley, Hilltop and Spring Lake Park, and the Hennepin County cities of Brooklyn Center, Brooklyn Park, Champlin and Osseo.

Schreiber was the Intergovernmental Coordinator for Anoka County from 1998 to 2009, where she developed legislative agendas, identified current and emerging issues, monitored issues, lobbied and testified on behalf of the county in local and state venues. Before that she served as the Government Relations Coordinator for the Environmental and Land Use Department of Doherty, Rumble & Butler, P.A.

Schreiber was elected to the Minnesota House of Representatives in 1979 and served 10 years, representing the Hibbing/Chisholm area of Minnesota’s Iron Range.

As a Council member, Schreiber serves as second vice chair of the Metropolitan Council, vice chair of the Transportation Committee, and member of the Environment Committee and the Litigation Review Special Committee.

“One of my priorities is to be responsive and available to the eight communities, two counties, their staff and elected officials in District 2,” Schreiber said. “I also want to develop a better line of communication with other metro-wide organizations.”

Schreiber said a top issue for the region is the fiscal constraints that all units of government are struggling to work within.

“State cuts to local government aid are creating hardships in many communities,” Schreiber said. “The Council could provide a facilitating role to assist in exploring ways to coordinate and perhaps combine local services while still maintaining community identity and autonomy.”

Schreiber lives in Brooklyn Park with her husband, Bill. She has three grown children and four grandchildren. She enjoys baking, gardening and spending time with family at their lake home.
