Decennial Census Summary Files
Abstract:
For 1990 and 2000, Decennial Census Summary Files include detailed tabulations of "long-form" data, covering demographic, social, economic, commuting, and housing characteristics. Geographies nationwide can be obtained from Census, with disaggregate geographic detail down to Block or Block Group-level.
For 2010 and 2020, Decennial Census Summary Files include tabulations of a limited number of characteristics: housing units, households, population, race and Hispanic/Latino origin, tenure, and household type. For the other "long-form" characteristics populated in only 1990 and 2000, consult the American Community Survey.
Purpose:
Decennial Census Summary Files include detailed tabulations of long-form data, covering demographic, social, economic, commuting, and housing characteristics. SF3 data are sample-based estimates, compiled from questionnaires of a sample of 1-in-6 households. SF1 data are population and housing from a "100% count." The Census Bureau attempts to survey or interview all known addresses. SF3 data are available for only 1990 and 2000; more recent data can be found in the American Community Survey data.
Geographies nationwide can be obtained from Census, with disaggregate geographic detail down to Block or Block Group-level. The Metropolitan Council's database includes summary data for counties, cities, townships, and the Twin Cities Region. We also provide data for census tracts, block groups, and blocks on the Minnesota Geospatial Commons (https://gisdata.mn.gov).
SF3 tables compiled by Census Bureau have approximately 16,000 variables. To make these user-friendly, Census statistics in Metropolitan Council's Community Profiles are recompiled by Metropolitan Council, with new field names, in order to accomplish definitional and categorical consistency between Census 1990, Census 2000, Census 2010, Census 2020, and American Community Survey (ACS).
If there are other data elements (variables) needed, we recommend Census's data.census.gov site for custom extracts of data tables. You may also wish to use the University of Minnesota's NHGIS DataFinder for custom extracts of data tables for complete sets of detailed geographies (minor civil divisions, Tracts, Block Groups).

Station Areas are defined as half-mile, non-overlapping transit-influenced areas based on existing and planned transitway station locations as defined by MetroTransit. In general, transitway stations are defined as a centrally located, single station point representing multidirectional transit stops or platforms. Additional consolidations of transitway stations were made to "coexisting" multimodal stations (i.e., Blue Line's 46th Street Station (Hiawatha Ave) A-Line's 46th Street Station) before defining Station Area. Both the consolidation of stations and definition of station areas are supported by the Federal Transportation Administration (FTA) Reporting Instructions for the Section 5309 Capital Investment Grant Program.
The source and allocation methodology of data included in the Station Area Statistics can be found in the data layer metadata record.
Because some station areas can represent more than one transitway corridor, the statistics for all Station Areas are provided with the download of any data layer requested at the All Station Area geography. Each Station Area is associated with a transitway Corridor segment (Corridor_ID). A Corridor segment can include one (1) to eighteen (30) stations. Use the following matrix to associate and/or summarize Corridor segments to a specific corridor(s):

Attribute Accuracy:
Statistics produced for Decennial Census SF3 (1990 and 2000) are survey-based estimates and are subject to error. The errors derive from research design (including instrument bias, data frame, and sampling), the survey data collection (non-response bias and response errors), and processing by the Census Bureau (data coding, compilation processes, and case weighting), as well as statistical inference error and uncertainty (which are related to sample size and variance within the measured attributes).
The Decennial Census SF1 reports population and housing from a "100% count." The Census Bureau attempts to survey or interview all known addresses. Still, the data are subject to error. The errors derive from survey data collection (response errors, field follow-up for missing cases) and processing by the Census Bureau (geolocation of population and housing, data coding, compilation processes, and imputation of missing cases).
On Dec. 5, 2016, more data elements became available for the 1990 and 2000 Census data.
On Nov. 28, 2017, the following edits were made:
--Filling in per capita income (PCI) for the region, which had been missing in the 1990 Census data;
--Switching the source of housing units by type (HUSFA, HUSFD, HU234, HUMF5, HUMOBILE, and HUOTHER) from Summary Tape File 1 to Summary Tape File 3 for consistency with the other housing type breakdowns for households and population (1990 Census only);
--Correcting the population in single-family homes (POPSF; 2000 Census only); and
--Using denominators from Summary Tape File 3 instead of Summary Tape File 1 for the following data elements drawn from Summary Tape File 3: citizenship, housing unit type, households by housing type, population by housing type, and vehicles available to households.
Logical Consistency:
The published Census statistics have been recompiled by Metropolitan Council, with new field names, in order to accomplish definitional and categorical consistency between Census 1990, Census 2000, Census 2010, Census 2020, and ACS.
