Featured Construction Photo

Photo taken between eastbound and westbound tracks, with a pedestrian overpass in the background.
Above: Progress continues at the Kenilworth LRT tunnel in Minneapolis this spring. Included among the many construction work activities is the installation of concrete plinths in the east heading that will support the track. The photo above shows crew members working in the westbound section of the LRT tunnel. The same work is also happening in the eastbound section (not shown in this photo). The eastbound and westbound sections of the tunnel are divided by a concrete wall. Freight rail track along the Kenilworth LRT tunnel area is located separately and above ground and adjacent to the tunnel.

SouthWest Station to City West Station

Construction overview:

At the SouthWest Station, we are constructing a new park-and-ride ramp adjacent to the existing ramp and a combined bus and LRT station. Moving east, the Prairie Center Drive LRT Bridge extends from the SouthWest Station area over Technology Drive and Prairie Center Drive. Moving east, LRT will enter the Eden Prairie Town Center Station area. An LRT bridge will cross over I-494, parallel to Flying Cloud Drive. Flying Cloud Drive is being reconstructed and LRT track installed. LRT will travel on bridges over Flying Cloud Drive and Nine Mile Creek. The Golden Triangle Station is being constructed as well as an LRT bridge over Shady Oak Road and Highway 212.

Ongoing:

  • Activities continue to be focused within the rail corridor and near SouthWest Station.

This Minnetonka map illustrates where construction crews are working. General activities are highlighted for your convenience. Please refer to text descriptions in this section for more details on major elements being constructed in specific areas.

This Hopkins map illustrates where construction crews are working. General activities are highlighted for your convenience. Please refer to text descriptions in this section for more details on major elements being constructed in specific areas.

Construction overview:

There are three stations in Hopkins: Shady Oak Road, Downtown Hopkins and Blake Road. Major structures in Hopkins include an LRT bridge over Excelsior and a regional trail underpass at Blake Road. In addition to LRT track construction there is also freight rail and regional trail work in the area. There are multiple LRT and freight railroad crossings at roadways.

Upcoming:

  • Expect a one-day southbound lane closure where 5th Avenue South intersects the LRT corridor on April 15 to stage equipment for the installation of a traction power substation. The Minnesota River Bluffs Trail closes during this time. See Hopkins detour maps.

Ongoing:

  • The roadway reconstruction on Pierce Avenue from Excelsior Boulevard to Blake Road is anticipated to be complete by end of June.
  • 17th Avenue South north of Excelsior Boulevard is closed until early June to perform intersection work. There are also lane closures on Excelsior Boulevard associated with this work. Pedestrians and cyclists must cross to the north side of Excelsior Boulevard to connect to the Minnesota River Bluffs Trail. See Hopkins detour maps.
  • K-Tel Drive/5th Street is closed to through traffic until early summer for road, utility, and rail work. Follow posted detour signage. See Hopkins detour maps.
  • Lane closures are in place at Jackson Avenue/Milwaukee Street through the end of April for sidewalk and median work.
  • The west sidewalk on Blake Road remains closed at the rail crossing. Use the sidewalk on the east side of Blake Road.
  • The northeast and southwest sidewalks at Excelsior Boulevard and Jackson Avenue/Milwaukee Street remain closed.

This St. Louis Park map illustrates where construction crews are working. General activities are highlighted for your convenience. Please refer to text descriptions in this section for more details on major elements being constructed in specific areas.

Construction overview:

Like in Hopkins, the project includes the construction of LRT track, freight rail track, and the regional trail. There are also three stations in St. Louis Park: Louisiana Avenue, Wooddale Avenue and Beltline Boulevard. Structures in this area include LRT and freight rail bridges over Louisiana Avenue, a connection between freight lines, a pedestrian/trail underpass east of Louisiana Avenue, freight, LRT and trail bridges over Minnehaha Creek, a regional trail underpass at Wooddale Avenue, freight, LRT and trail bridges over Highway 100 and a regional trail bridge crossing over Beltline Boulevard.

Ongoing:

  • The east sidewalk on Louisiana Avenue north of Oxford Avenue remains closed.
  • The westbound lane on Oxford Street between Edgewood Avenue and Louisiana Avenue is narrowed to accommodate site work at the station (the parking lane is closed).

There are two Minneapolis maps with each illustrating where construction crews are working. General activities are highlighted for your convenience. Please refer to text descriptions in this section for more details on major elements being constructed in specific areas.

West Lake Street to West 21st Street

Upcoming:

  • A closure of Cedar Lake Parkway at the rail crossing is anticipated to occur later this construction season. More information about this closure will be communicated to the community as it becomes available.

Ongoing:

  • Lane closures are in place on West Lake Street between Chowen Avenue and Market Street. Traffic impacts are expected throughout the summer. Crews are performing sidewalk safety enhancements and station entrance work at the West Lake Street Station area. Once complete, there will be a barrier separating road traffic and sidewalk users. There is an associated detour for pedestrians. See Minneapolis detour maps.
    • Additionally, METRO B Line bus rapid transit (BRT) project construction will be ongoing along West Lake Street and a small portion of Excelsior Boulevard in 2024. B Line construction in the West Lake Street bridge area is expected to ramp up later this summer with major activities such as nearby bus station construction, sidewalk and median work, and roadway resurfacing. Expect traffic impacts throughout the majority of 2024, especially during peak commuting hours. Visit the B Line BRT Project construction page to sign up for B Line construction updates.
  • There continues to be significant construction at the Kenilworth LRT tunnel. The construction is primarily focused on excavation, cutting of metal sheets, and concrete placement as weather permits. Truck transport and maintenance work on the freight rail tracks may cause noticeable noise and some occasional vibration to nearby residents.
  • Pumps and generators will run overnight periodically in various parts of the construction corridor, especially at the Kenilworth LRT tunnel site. Pumps are used to manage water, and generators are used to power pumps and other equipment.

Bryn Mawr Station to Glenwood Ave

Upcoming:

  • A full road closure of Van White Memorial Boulevard between I-394 and 2nd Street is expected to begin late-April to perform underground utility work. This duration is estimated to be approximately one month.
  • Expect traffic impacts on Fremont Avenue near Glenwood Avenue starting late May for storm sewer work as well as road and sidewalk reconstruction. More details will be provided once the timing and sequencing of this work is finalized.

Ongoing:

  • The sidewalk on the west side of Penn Avenue South across the I-394 bridge will remain closed into spring.
  • The intersection of Royalston Avenue and Holden Street is closed for LRT track work into fall 2024.
  • Royalston Avenue between 5th Avenue North and Border Avenue is closed for utility and road reconstruction work into fall 2024. See Minneapolis detour maps.

Visit the detour maps webpage for updated maps.

Upcoming:

  • Expect trail impacts on April 15 in Hopkins where 5th Avenue South intersects the Minnesota River Bluffs Trail and LRT corridor. A detour will be in place for trail traffic to allow the installation of a traction power substation. See Hopkins detour maps.
  • Expect minor trail disruptions the week of April 15 along the South Cedar Lake Trail to install traction power substations throughout the corridor. Aside from the trail impact mentioned above, trail traffic should be flagged around staged equipment and activities.
  • Expect a closure of the Cedar Lake Regional Trail segment between Royalston Avenue and Azine Alley (just west of West River Parkway) starting April 22 for about three months. Activities at this location include sewer utility work, trail reconstruction and improvements, and the relocation of tracks that are used for the staging of Northstar commuter rail cars. Unfortunately, the space required for the different work activities does not allow for the trail to remain open, even in a narrowed condition. The detour will connect into the existing detour of the Cedar Lake Trail and utilize protected bike lanes on Hennepin Avenue to connect back to the trail at Azine Alley just west of West River Parkway. There are no public access points to the trail between Azine Alley and Royalston Avenue.

Ongoing:

  • Trails in the Opus area in Minnetonka have reopened. There may be periodic short-term closures in the future for any additional work needed.
  • The Minnesota River Bluffs Trail between Shady Oak Road in Minnetonka and 11th Avenue in Hopkins is anticipated to reopen in 2024.
  • The Minnesota River Bluffs Trail between 11th Avenue and Excelsior Boulevard in Hopkins is open.
  • The segment of the South Cedar Lake Trail between Excelsior Boulevard and Blake Road in Hopkins remains closed and is anticipated to reopen in 2024.
  • The South Cedar Lake Trail at Louisiana Avenue in St. Louis Park has reopened following the construction and installation of an LRT signal house.
  • The segment of the South Cedar Lake Trail in St. Louis Park between Beltline Boulevard and France Avenue is closed during the weekdays until mid-May for the installation of a traction power substation. This trail segment will reopen on weekends.
  • The segment of the South Cedar Lake Trail from Blake Road to Beltline Boulevard in St. Louis Park is open. There will be periodic short-term closures this spring/summer for additional work as noted above; additional short-term closures may be required and will be posted in future construction updates.
  • South Cedar Lake Trail users between Chowen Avenue South and the Midtown Greenway in Minneapolis may experience brief delays to accommodate adjacent construction. The trail remains open and flaggers may be present. Trail users may experience construction traffic crossing the trail in this area – please use caution.
  • The segment of the Kenilworth Trail from the Midtown Greenway to West 21st Street is closed for LRT tunnel construction and is anticipated to reopen in 2025.
  • The segment of the Kenilworth Trail from West 21st Street to the Bryn Mawr Station area remains closed and is anticipated to reopen in 2025.
  • The segment of the Cedar Lake Trail from the Bryn Mawr Station area to Van White Boulevard is open. Trail users may experience construction traffic crossing the trail near the station – please use caution.
  • The segment of the Cedar Lake Trail east of Van White Memorial Boulevard is anticipated to reopen in 2025.
  • The Luce Line Regional Trail bridge that crosses the freight rail corridor connecting Bryn Mawr Meadows Park with the Bassett Creek Valley Station area is closed and is scheduled to reopen in 2025.
