Metropolitan Council responds to wastewater spill in City of Mound

February 15, 2023

The Metropolitan Council, operator of the regional wastewater collection and treatment system, responded the afternoon of Wednesday, February 15, to a wastewater spill from its regional sanitary sewer pipe in the City of Mound. It occurred near the home at 4957 Willshire Boulevard, in the public right of way on the north side.

An air release valve malfunctioned in a section of pipe. An estimated 100 gallons of wastewater was released. Crews from the Metropolitan Council’s Environmental Services division stopped the spill and vacuumed the spill site. Sewer service was not interrupted. Repairs to the valve will be made before end of week.

Caution tape has been set up warning the public to avoid the spill site, due to the potential of pathogens, such as bacteria, parasites, and viruses, temporarily being present at the site. The Met Council will assess how long the site should be avoided. There was no impact to nearby lakes.

A call from the City of Mound Public Works Department allowed the Met Council to provide a quick response. As with any spill, the Minnesota Duty Officer was notified.
