PURPOSE & OUTCOMES

The purpose of this meeting is to explore the topic of drinking water source protection.
Desired outcomes include:
  1. New TAC members are appointed
  2. Review of key Twin Cities metro area source water protection information
  3. Opportunities to inform Legislative Water Commission regarding policy recommendations on groundwater and drinking water are identified
  4. Opportunities to engage the Land Use Advisory Committee (LUAC) are identified

10:10     BUSINESS

 

1. Welcome of new MAWSAC members (3 minutes) – Sandy Rummel

 

2. TAC member appointments (2 minutes) – Glen Gerads, Dean Lotter, Catherine Neuschler

Members will vote on the appointment of two new TAC members.
 

3. TAC update (5 minutes) – Mark Maloney

 

4. One Water Summit update (10 minutes)

Members will summarize their experience at the One Water Summit, held July 10-12, 2018 in Minneapolis. A video was created for the Summit, to communicate a shared water message. It is on YouTube at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=flMMKifsb-A&feature=youtu.be
 

5. Presentations: Considerations for Protecting Drinking Water Sources (45 minutes)

Information will be shared to support group discussions to follow:
  • High-level information about source water protection in the Twin Cities, including regional policies and progress on Master Water Supply Plan goals
  • Summary from Glen Gerads about source water protection challenges for surface water providers
  • Overview of Legislative Water Commission development of policy recommendations regarding drinking water and groundwater
  • Summary from Jon Commers, LUAC chair, regarding long-standing LUAC interest in water supply issues

6.Reflection – Committee Members (5 minutes)

Committee members will be asked to individually reflect on what they’ve heard. A worksheet with prompting questions will support this activity.
 

7. BREAK (10 minutes)


8.Question Burst – Committee Members (15 minutes)

Members will share their questions around the challenge of protecting drinking water sources.
 

9. Small Group Discussion – Committee Members (30 minutes)

 

12:15     DRAFT RECOMMENDATIONS

Small groups will report out, followed by a full group discussion of recommendations to TAC, Metropolitan Council, LUAC, Legislative Water Commission and others as determined by MAWSAC.
 

 12:30     PLAN FOR NEXT MEETING & HOMEWORK

Members should look for follow-up emails about actions identified at this meeting. The next meeting is planned for Tuesday, October 16th from 10AM – 1PM. The topic will be conservation and efficiency.
