Orono Lift Station Improvements (L46 & L49)

MCES Project No. 802831

Understandably, the spread of COVID-19, also known as the coronavirus, has raised questions about the status of Metropolitan Council Environmental Services (MCES) plant and interceptor construction projects. Please note the following:

  • Construction on wastewater treatment plants and sewer interceptors will continue. The contractors are following working environment protocols (asking employees to stay home if they are sick, social distancing, etc.) as outlined by public health agencies.

  • Some project staff are working remotely while others remain on-site to ensure proper oversight of the project. Staff will stay connected through emails, conference calls, and web-based meetings to manage construction activities.

Project Description

Metropolitan Council Environmental Services (MCES),operator of the metro-area wastewater collection and treatment system, is making improvements to two existing lift stations, L46 and L49, located adjacent to Shadywood Road in Orono. These lift stations are a critical component of sanitary sewer service in Orono, taking wastewater from local residents and businesses and pumping it to the regional sewer that delivers it to the Blue Lake Wastewater Treatment Plant on the Minnesota River. The scheduled improvements will enhance the system’s efficiency and reliability and improve site safety for employees and the public.
The improvements to L46, located at the Togo Road/Shadywood Road intersection, include:

  • replacement of deteriorated equipment
  • upgraded pumping capacity
  • improved sight lines for traffic safety
  • installation of a new driveway for safe maintenance access
The improvements to L49, currently located on the edge of the Crystal Bay Road near Shadywood Road, include:
  • relocation of the existing station directly south, away from roadway traffic, to improve site safety
  • upgraded pumping capacity
  • installation of grinder pumps to reduce future maintenance
  • installation of a backup generator to prevent service disruption
  • a new building to house electrical and control systems

This project is part of the broader Facility Plan for the Lake Minnetonka service area, which serves communities within Hennepin and Carver County. This plan helps MCES maintain operational reliability, preserve regional assets, and protect the environment through replacement and rehabilitation of aging infrastructure.
