Project Description

Metropolitan Council Environmental Services (ES), operator of the metro-area wastewater collection and treatment system, completed emergency sanitary sewer repairs in Orono along North Shore Drive between Pine Lane and Shoreline Drive.

Work included:

  1. Installing an above-ground temporary piping system to safely convey wastewater.
  2. Performing additional assessments on the existing pipe.
  3. Performing necessary repairs on the pipes.
  4. Short-term closures of driveways and streets.

Schedule

This project began in February 2024 and was completed in November 2024.  Final restoration and touchup work will occur in spring 2025, after the winter thaw.  Final activities will be completed under shoulder closures.

We appreciate the public’s continued patience as unforeseen circumstances affected the project timeline.

Project Location

Map showing project location in Orono. The temporary conveyance and work zone starts along North Shore Drive west of French Creek Drive and extend east from this point to Shoreline Drive. Pipe assessments and testing extend from the eastern point where French Creek Drive meets North Shore Drive eastward to just before Shoreline Drive.

Repair work has been completed using a construction method that tunneled through the existing sewer pipe, installing a new pipe in its place. This method helped minimize impacts to the neighborhood. It required four pits to be installed.  This method is quieter, faster, requires less equipment, and has fewer traffic impacts than open excavation does.

As part of maintaining our interceptor pipe system, we periodically assess the condition of our pipes. A routine assessment was conducted in December 2023 along North Shore Drive.  It detected significant corrosion in our pipe between French Creek Drive and Railroad Avenue. While we did not anticipate leaks, we decided to make immediate repairs due to the environmentally sensitive location of the pipe.
