Transportation Projects

Planning and building a 21st century transportation system

Transportation Policy Plan 2040 cover and link to TPP information. As the region's federally-designated Metropolitan Planning Organization (MPO), the Met Council works with local, state, and federal policymakers to anticipate and plan the best ways to meet the transportation needs of our growing region.

We produce the Transportation Policy Plan, which guides the development of the region’s transportation system. The plan provides the vision and estimates the anticipated funding needed to build and maintain transportation projects over the next 25 years.

The plan includes investments in both the highway and transit systems. These projects go through extensive processes before being built, and include numerous opportunities for public input — from early planning to engineering through construction. Many of these projects are delivered by regional transportation partners other than the Metropolitan Council and they have their own websites that provide more detailed information on the projects.

Regional Solicitation

The Transportation Advisory Board (TAB) plays a key role in reviewing proposed transportation projects in the plan, and recommending projects to receive federal funding. Federal transportation funds are allocated to metropolitan areas across the country. Communities and agencies in the region apply for the federal funds for their transportation projects through the Regional Solicitation process. This process occurs every two years and is open to all governments in the Twin Cities region.

Local transportation projects

Local projects such as streets and bicycle and pedestrian paths are planned and managed by cities and counties. Information on local projects is generally available on the appropriate city or county website.
