Providing data expertise to the Twin Cities region

Focusing on the demographics and development of the Twin Cities region, Metropolitan Council's Regional Policy and Research team analyzes, interprets and disseminates data to inform planning and decision-making across the region.

The Regional Policy and Research team serves the Council and the region by providing:

  • Analyses of US Census Bureau data to describe regional trends and issues

  • Long-term forecasts of population, household and employment used in the Council’s  regional plan, Thrive MSP 2040

  • Annual estimates of population, households, and average household size for each county, city and township in the seven-county region

  • Data from annual and biennial surveys that provide vital information on building permits, affordable housing production and metropolitan residents

  • The Generalized Land Use Inventory
