An essential part of the region's transportation system and economy
Aviation is a critical part of our regional transportation system and important to the region's economy: in 2012 airlines brought 4 million visitors to the region, and handled nearly 200,000 metric tons of cargo.
The Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport (MSP) and 10 smaller airports serve regional business and recreational users. The Metropolitan Airports Commission (MAC) is a public corporation that owns and operates MSP and 6 smaller airports throughout the region.
The Council works with MAC, airport users, owners, affected communities, and MnDOT to write the aviation plan element of the Transportation Policy Plan. It includes goals, polices, review criteria, guidelines, coordination, and implementation procedures, as well as an airports system plan.
