Messages from the Council Chair

Join us for Thrive MSP 2040 outreach meetings in April and May

April 2013
This month, Metropolitan Council Members and staff will return to communities across the region as part of a second phase of outreach in the development of Thrive MSP 2040, the metropolitan planning guide that the Council is required by statute to create every 10 years.

Council Chair Susan HaighDuring the first phase of outreach, the interest and participation of officials, community leaders, and the public was impressive. The strength of this process is that together, we’re building on what we’re learning and aiming toward a vision that best positions this region for success over the next 30 years.

The meetings we’ve scheduled in April and May will build on challenges, information and ideas presented to the Council during 2012. During these meetings, we will seek to engage participants on four particularly challenging policy topics:

  • Regionally Significant Economic Places
  • Water Supply
  • Land Use and Transit
  • Affordable Housing

These multi-faceted policy topics arose at almost every meeting we held on Thrive during earlier outreach efforts. There are many perspectives, but no easy answers. To help the Council develop strategies for addressing these challenges and policy solutions, we’re convening in-depth discussions on these four topics.

Five public meetings are spread across the region. In addition, those who are not able to attend the meetings can participate online through the Council’s idea-gathering website or share information via social media. Specific discussions about each topic will be featured on the Your Ideas site, and participants can also still submit ideas and view other ideas. Whether online or in person, we hope you’ll join us!
