Upcoming closure of Burnham Road in Minneapolis begins June 2

A closure of Burnham Road just north of Cedar Lake Parkway to Park Lane in Minneapolis is anticipated to begin on June 2 and last through mid-summer. The purpose of this closure is to construct the final roadway that has been in a temporary condition throughout most of LRT construction. The Burnham Road Bridge and Lake of the Isles Parkway will be utilized in a two-way condition for local access for the duration of this closure. Detour information is on the detour maps page.

Reminder: An upcoming weekend of freight work in the Kenilworth Corridor
Freight rail and utility work is scheduled for the Kenilworth Corridor in Minneapolis this weekend. During freight track construction activities, freight trains will not operate in the Kenilworth Corridor. The focus of this weekend’s work is freight track and utility construction.
Similar to the previous weekend, work is expected to take place outside of regular work hours during the following times:
- Saturday, May 31: 7 AM-10 PM
- Sunday, June 1: 7 AM-10 PM
Work activities will occur primarily between West Lake Street to just south of Cedar Lake Parkway. Expect truck traffic to be active on roads near those areas. Cedar Lake Parkway will remain open.
Staging areas and access roads in the Kenilworth Corridor are anticipated to be active for materials transportation and loading anywhere between the West Lake Street Station area and the Bassett Creek Valley Station area.
Construction activities will produce noticeable noise. Activities will include track removal and construction, excavation, grading, compaction, tamping, and hauling of materials and equipment. Some of these activities may produce noticeable vibration for nearby residents. Lighting may be present for crews to work in the dark.

Royalston Avenue to Bryn Mawr Station
General Safety Note: The public is reminded that traffic signage and materials are not to be moved. Moving or altering this signage can cause unsafe traffic conditions.
Ongoing:
- Roadway and utility work continues in the Royalston Avenue/Farmers Market area. Vehicle traffic is limited to:
- A single lane southbound on Border Avenue from Olson Memorial Highway to Holden Street North;
- A single lane eastbound on Holden Street North from Border Avenue to Royalston Avenue; and
- A single lane northbound on Royalston Avenue.
- There is no parking on Border Avenue, Holden Street, and Royalston Avenue during construction. Construction activities are anticipated to last through the fall, weather permitting. Access to local businesses is being maintained throughout construction. Detour information is on the detour maps page.
- Royalston Avenue north of Glenwood Avenue up to the LRT tracks at Holden Street is closed for track and roadway work through 2025. Pedestrian access is maintained for the duration of this closure.
- 2nd Avenue North at Fremont Avenue North is closed for road, sidewalk and utility work. Vehicle and pedestrian access for local businesses and residents is maintained during construction. Phases of this work will result in changes to traffic patterns:
- Phase 1: Fremont Avenue North between Glenwood Avenue and 2nd Avenue North will be in a southbound one-way condition and 2nd Avenue North will be closed just east of Fremont Avenue North through mid-June. Detour information is on the detour maps page.
- Phase 2: Fremont Avenue North between 2nd Avenue North and Glenwood Avenue will be in a northbound one-way condition and 2nd Avenue North will be in a two-way condition from mid-June into August.

West 21st Street to West Lake Street

- A closure of Cedar Lake Parkway to vehicle traffic just east of Burnham Road across the rail corridor to Xerxes Avenue South is anticipated to begin later in the summer once Burnham Road reopens. The purpose of this closure is to construct the final roadway and trail across the freight rail corridor. The Burnham Road Bridge and Lake of the Isles Parkway will remain in a two-way condition for local access for the duration of this closure. Non-motorized access across the rail corridor is expected to be maintained.
Ongoing:
- Maintenance activities on the freight rail tracks may occur as needed outside of normal working hours and cause noticeable noise and some occasional vibration to nearby residents.
- The outside westbound lane and the north sidewalk on Excelsior Boulevard between Market Plaza and West 32nd Street are closed until early summer for new sidewalk and accessible pedestrian ramp construction. Local access for businesses and residents is being maintained throughout construction. Pedestrian detour information is on the detour maps page.
- The east sidewalk on West 32nd Street between Excelsior and Chowen is closed during construction. Pedestrians should use the west side of West 32nd Street.
- There is a partial roadway and sidewalk closure on Chowen Avenue South and Abbott Avenue South through the fall for the construction of roadway, sidewalk, and boulevard and the installation of new lighting and trees. Local access via two-way traffic on both roadways is being maintained throughout construction for residents. There is no parking on Abbott Avenue or Chowen Avenue during construction. Parking is allowed on West 32nd Street unless otherwise noted.
- Hennepin County is reconstructing parts of Minnetonka Boulevard and County Road 25 west of the Green Line Extension project.

St. Louis Park, Hopkins, Minnetonka, and Eden Prairie Trails

Trails are open from the Midtown Greenway in Minneapolis through Eden Prairie. There are no trail impacts.
Project staff share the community’s desire to see the trails reopen as soon as possible. The project office will continue to work with the contractor to improve on these opening dates.
