Workforce and Training
Construction-related opportunities
Southwest LRT is the largest infrastructure project in the state's history and is expected to create 7,500 construction jobs, with an estimated $350 million in payroll. Our community partners will be monitoring Met Council actions to see if the public dollars spent are creating opportunities for minority and women owned businesses and employment for lower income families.
Disadvantaged Business Enterprise
Disadvantaged Business Enterprise, or DBE, refers to the Federal Disadvantaged Business Enterprise Program. This is a federal program for increasing the participation of women and minority owned businesses in the award of federally assisted contracts. More information about DBE
Workforce development
Workforce development are efforts by project owners, trade unions, community training organizations, and contractors to provide construction career opportunities. The Met Council’s workforce development department will lead, along with project partners, the design and delivery of pathways to prepare workers for a career in the construction trades. More information about workforce development
Workforce compliance
The Minnesota Human Rights Department (MDHR) supports workforce development initiatives as they are critical for creating career pathways into the construction industry for individuals who have had limited exposure and opportunities to enter non-traditional industries, such as women and people of color. Workforce development initiatives are also important as they help contractors to have sufficient workforce to meet employment participation goals. Union training programs, community organizations, and agencies such as DEED and the Met Council have established workforce development programs. More information about workforce compliance
Construction trades training
Building Strong Communities is a construction trades apprenticeship preparatory program that prepares long-term unemployed adults and recent high school graduates for careers in the construction industry. More information about Building Strong Communities
