Contaminated Materials Study

Contaminated material study is required to a transportation project to understand project risks during construction. Two important and essential steps for this study are:

  • Phase I Environmental Site Assessment (ESA), which is the initial information gathering through the desktop study of historical records, past uses and reported activities, and interview(s) with several entities including local government and residents when applicable
  • Phase II ESA, which is a deeper study to certain parcels are properties where the Phase I ESA indicates requirement for further investigation through field work, sampling and laboratory analysis to understand the magnitude of contamination

Phase I ESA for majority of the corridor was completed in Fall 2022. Remaining smaller portion of the Phase I ESA will be completed in early Fall 2023. Phase II ESA will be initiated in October 2023 and will last throughout 2024, with majority field work being completed in Fall 2023.
