The Metropolitan Area Water Supply Advisory Committee provides advice and assistance to the Council in its water supply planning activities. Created by the Minnesota Legislature, MAWSAC played a lead role in developing the Metropolitan Area Master Water Supply Plan and continues to guide its implementation.

Report on water supply planning activities
MAWSAC is responsible for reporting to the Met Council and Minnesota Legislature every five years. The committee’s report and recommendations include information provided by the Technical Advisory Committee (TAC). MAWSAC also routinely provides input to Council water supply-related reports and projects.
- Recommendations for Water Supply Planning in the Metro Area – Summary (PDF, 4 pages): This summary highlights key metro area water supply information including a vision, goals, and recommended actions.
- Recommendations for Water Supply Planning in the Metro Area (PDF): This report is a guide for decision makers on how to approach priority water supply challenges in the coming years. It emphasizes conservation, interjurisdictional cooperation, and long-term sustainability. The report was shared with Metropolitan Council and Minnesota Legislature in February 2022.
- 2005-2020 Water Supply Planning in the Twin Cities Metropolitan Area (PDF): This report, produced by Metropolitan Council, summarizes findings, recommendations, and continuing planning activities of the Council. This plan was shared with the Subcommittee on Minnesota Water Policy and included in the Minnesota Water Plan, Minnesota Statute 103B.151. MAWSAC reviewed and provided input on this report.
- Water Supply Now and For the Future (PDF): This high-level summary of the region’s water supply sources, key challenges, and regional goal includes a 5-year plan for activities in four focus areas. The report was shared with Metropolitan Council, the Legislative Water Commission, and the chairs and ranking minority members of the house of representatives and senate committees and divisions with jurisdiction over environment and natural resources in February 2017.
